I grew up in Lincolnton. NC and attended the School of Design at NC State University where I graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Product Design. Although my classes were heavily concentrated in design, I also took classes in painting and sculpture. I was fortunate to be chosen to study with the noted sculptor, Jose de Rivera and one of my pieces, a curvilinear expression of four mutually perpendicular planes, was selected for an exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
In preparation for the free time I was about to gain upon retirement and after a 37 year hiatus from painting, I started classes with Elizabeth Ross at CPCC in January of that year. I decided to pursue a very realistic style in contrast to the very abstract works from my years at the School of Design. This is not surprising given the many years of designing very functional products. I have taken a number of ceramics classes at CPCC with Jeff Pender and Dottie Baker and have concentrated on the hand built/ slab construction process which affords me great flexibility in the forms and spatial relationships of my sculptures. My current sculptural work has a clear basis in my pieces from college.
